thats about as much web-shorthand you'll see me display.
I never saw the movie, but during New York i was bored out of my mind and decided to read the book i'd brought along, "Bridge to Terabithia" Spoilers ahead for anyone whose not read the movie or watched the book....... did i just type that? okay i'm going to leave it because that was just funny.... moving on...
Why did no-one warn me that this, oddly very short book which i finished in a little less than a few hours, was one of those "rip-your-heart-out-and-make-you-eat-it" books. When i scooped this book up from the piles of my mother's inventory a few weeks back i was elated. "Bridge to Terabithia? we own that book? I kinda wanted to see the movie" "well then read it!" My mother insisted, "we've had it for ages, it was almost required reading for you in middleschool i think"
At the time i wondered to myself. How could such and obvously lovely jem of fantasy be one of my required reading books back in middleschool? they often refrained from high-fantasy unless it was a very short story. But i pressed such thoughts to the back of my head and began reading it, in snippets at first, then on the new york trip i brought it along with me and Read the entire thing. third to the last chapter i realized exactly WHY this book was required reading back in middleschool.
apparently school systems in ohio equate tragedy with good literature. Anyone of my classmates in the third grade will tell you, i literally bawled my eyes out in class when Searchlight died in "Stone Fox", (im chuckeling about it now but at the time i was rather heartbroken) I am an animal Lover, so the death of a loyal loving pet was something that always struck a chord with me.
Same thing with "Old Yeller", same thing with "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Bridge to Terabithia" was different only because the one who died near the end was a human instead of a loyal dog.
This was the issue i had with Harry Potter too.
Mind you i love the books. Absolutely love them.
But for sensitive people like me, i could see Rowling smirking as she wrote the last chapters of the last book, i beleive it when something like this: (warning, adult language and copious swearing ahead, parental discretion is advised... but you'll ignore it anyway because if you're on the interent you're no stranger to cussing)
"think your done crying yet?... no mother fucker you arent" .... reaching prolouge "okay, yeah, you think you're done crying now bitch? do you? ALBUS SEVERUS mother fucker yeah i want to see your tears warping the pages, thats a good little monkey DANCE! yea yea i see those tears, i just raped every peice of masculinity you'll ever have, i hope your reading this in a public place, stop trying to sniffle those tears back bitch YOU CANT!"
..... im sure she wasnt nearly as abrasive in her thought processes but you get the picture (and swearing, admit it, makes people laugh)
